One of the few ways you can personalize your facebook page without learning FBML is to add boxes. I guess they are removing them to make room for more ads.
If they were making way for better friend finding and friend management I'd be all for it. But I doubt that's what they have in mind. I guess I could go to the "Help Center" and find out.
