So what the Twitter folks seem to keep forgetting in building, or imagining they are building a revenue model, is that Twitter is free yes, but Twitter is failing.
There is much love for twitter, but also much amusement that they seem to be so out of touch with the business world that they can't do more than float a few trial balloons. Meanwhile the Twitter-XXXXXX businesses are thriving (at least flooding) around them. And still the Fail Whale appears, the Error TimeOut appears, the Oops Something's Wrong appears, and now this…
We're "bending over backwards" for Google. Seems to me they might consider bending a different direction and getting their act together. While at Dell I opened up some conversations between Twitter and my VP Bob Pearson. And guess what became of it? Nada. And why do you suppose the only company to verify over 1 million bucks of revenue attributable to Twitter was unable to reach any type of partnership with Biz Stone and Co. Why? Because they don't care. They don't get it. And they are arrogant.
Well, mark this statement. "Twitter is headed for a big fail." And here's why.
Can you imagine a communications platform as powerful and ubiquitous as Email being controled by Google on the G-Mail platform? No, I didn't think you could.
So what is Twitter, what do they have now that they are "mainstream."
Well, what I see they have is problems. Server problems. Political problems. The have the money for now, but it won't last if they can't figure out how to make money. But the primary problem the Twitter team has, even in their live conference calls it is clear, they think Twitter is THE WAY.
But I have news for them. Twitter is the solution for the moment, but the APIs and applications built around Twitter to take care of all the Twitter failings… And I believe Twitter has lost control of the platform. And in the end all Twitter has is a current list of user names and passwords. And if I said, I have an improved TWITTER-PRO platform, that was not associated with TWITTER in any way, and you could use all your current TWITTER stuff and not lose a single Tweet. What would you say?
Oh, and this UBER-TWITTER will be free. It will not have a fail mascot that is more popular than the actual logo. And the business proposition will be clear from launch.
So everyone is flocking to Twitter. Well, it is my opinion that everyone is flocking, and Twitter happens to be the current "platform." And in order to survive they'd better start improving their service. And bend over further for Google, before Google swallows them up whole. And without a single line of code changing hands.
Now, I would be giving up too much to reveal this new platform that's coming. But it IS coming. And I can promise you Biz and Company have no idea what I am am talking about. But that's the beauty of the thing. The UBER-TWITTER will not need Twitter at all.
So stay tuned.
