The Best Global Brands of 2009
There are few surprises in the list of The Top 50 Best Global Brands of 2009. But with the economy a veritable see-saw over the past year, it's interesting to see how brand values fared vs. the valuation of the companies themselves. Although the United States was hit hard by the crash of its financial markets, it's clear to see that the country dominates the list with the most top global brands. For a description of the basis of these conclusions, check out the methodology and the brand value equation.
Undo Send in Real Life (an almost spiritual post from HBR)
We've all hit the "Send" button on an email and immediately regretted it. So many of us do it regularly, in fact, that Google has added a feature to Gmail called "Undo Send". Once you hit "Send" Gmail holds the email for five seconds, during which time you can stop the email from going out.
The Game Controller Periodic Table (fun visual on Flickr)
Tom Hester At the Velveeta Room in Austin (a buddy of mine should not be missed, that is if you like biting, profane, profound laughs)
Tom Hester tells stories. Wickedly hilarious stories. Tom combines a bright mind with a dark sense of humor to spin outrageously funny tales taken from his twisted life experiences.
Beauty Brands Doing it Right on Twitter
I'm kicking off 2010 with a shout out to five "Twit-tastic" beauty brands who are, indeed, "doing it right,” and expanding their communities via social media.
The 7 keys to social branding (why not 6 or 10?)
But a brand is the collective impression people gain not only from you and your marketing efforts, but from all of their interactions with you—and the interactions others have as well (newly amplified through social media). That means we need to look at the process of branding in different way: through a social lens.
Tuesday, January 5, 2010 – Sagittarius (tweeting Tarot, seriously how did I get subscribed to this one?)
Your key planet Jupiter places its magnifying lens on your vision of the future, making everything appear more wonderful than it actually is in reality. The danger is that you could buy into someone's plan without considering the potential problems. It's easy for you to see the big picture now, but it's critical to also take a hard look at the details before you find yourself in over your head.
Another Great Use for Amazon S3: Automatic WordPress Backup Plugin
I got my bill for last month’s bandwidth usage from Amazon S3 and apparently I’m using a lot more traffic than last month by the cost ($10.11). Exciting! Generally this means that I’m getting more traffic which is reasonable since I’ve had some posts (like this one) which got hit hard. So far, Amazon S3 has done some great work for me in terms of my site speed; in fact I’m really satisfied, and now I’ve found another great WordPress plugin that connects directly with S3: Automatic WordPress Backup!
Gary Vaynerchuk: Creative Facebook Welcome Tab
He’s got an amazing Facebook welcome tab that I think is worth a look. I can guess that ministries are going to start spending more time, attention, and money in making their Facebook pages more awesome. Better start taking notes from those who are doing it well!
Joikuspot: Convert Your Cellphone To A Wifi Hotspot
It shares your 3G internet connection via Wifi.I tried it last week during my vacation in Davao and it works like a charm. Using the Smart Buddy Unli Surf plan, me and my wife can surf the internet at the same time using our laptops by connecting to the Wifi hotspot from my cellphone.
2010: The Year of Mobile (great *another* year of mobile)
A year from now, we're going to look back on what happened this year and declare that it was finally the "year of mobile." 1. Devices, 2. Networks, 3. Applications.
Top 50 Twitter Tracking and Analytics Tools
With over 70 Million users on Twitter, it is definitely the “buzz” word of the year. Yet there are people who do not know about tracking and analyzing their stats, influence and success on Twitter. Today there are many social media tracking and analytics tools available that can track your performance on social media sites like twitter.
Mobile Applications Provide Personal Sleep Analytics
We're becoming used to the idea of analyzing our personal behavior through applications like Nike+ and Run Keeper. Now take it from running to the opposite extreme, monitoring yourself during sleep, with WakeMate and Sleep Cycle.
Contest: Your predictions for Apple’s tablet
But what will make this Apple gadget unique and special beyond the iMac and iPhone? We’re looking for very specific details on what you think will wow us. Not just “a new way to read newspapers,” but a specific detail of how that app will rock our socks. Remember the first time you saw someone pinch a Web page on the iPhone? Remember when iTunes suddenly sprouted a music store with all four of the biggest labels providing singles for sale at 99 cents? We’re looking for you to get specific on one special It Just Works detail that all other tablet makers wouldn’t think of trying to bring to market.
Benefits of Online Therapists and Counselling
The most recent way of counselling is getting a therapy online. Most people in some cases don’t feel relaxed in face to face conversation with the counselor so online therapy is best for them. They feel so calm by this way is that maybe they don’t want to share their secrets or want to be humiliated in front of the therapist. Maybe they don’t want to expose themselves in front of anyone could be another reason. They accept this way of counseling and are more comfortable with it. Parson who has seen a lot of sorrows and grievances gets a special attention from the counselor and is given some good advices. These advices will help him to live a tension and depression free life.
Job Search 2010: Make It Your Business
I work in medical publishing, and over the last several years the bulk of our production work has been *transitioned* to India. Of course, these changes were the brainchild of the top brass in their attempts to cut costs. What I learned in 2009 is that *cost cutting* actually means lost jobs for U.S. workers. The company let go—or “reduced” in their lingo—over half of the staff at my location, and those of us who were retained had to interview for our own jobs. Now less than 100 people work at a location that once employed over 300. It is a stressful, depressing, bad environment, but I must be thankful for it because so many people today don’t even have a bad job to go to anymore.
Women Warm Up to Brands on Social Sites
Social networking has become a must for women this year, according to a new edition of the SheSpeaks “Annual Social Media Study.” Social networking profile penetration climbed from 58% of Internet users in 2008 to 86% in 2009.
How to use Wikipedia as a marketing tool
Is this blasphemy? Inc has compiled a list of ten ways to use Wikipedia as a marketing tool. Here are three of the ten tips:
* Start with a stub.
* Include third-party links.
* Use the discussion page.
G-spot doesn't exist
The team studied 1,800 women and found no proof of the orgasm hotspot, concluding that the G-spot is simply a myth pushed by the media and sex therapists. Sexologist Beverley Whipple called the research “flawed” and argued that researchers failed to include the experiences of lesbian or bisexual women and didn’t take into account the effects of different sexual partners and sex techniques.
China Daily on Social Media
The main issue that Tiffany and I discussed was how increased Internet penetration and speed tends to democratize usage. In other words, the Internet starts out with geeks, freaks and adolescent boys, but ends up becoming a medium of generalized usage.
Apple and Markets Impulsive Breakout
Today the markets and Apple broke out in the face of overbought conditions. And that’s what makes it most impressive. Normally overbought levels like these need to wind down some before a breakout can occur, but today the futures were up, riding the wave of overseas market advances, then we gapped up at the open and never really looked back.

Filling the Social Media Void: Shout or Be Shouted At!
Yesterday I posted a critique of Bayer's use of YouTube to present the video "A Discussion of Oral Conception Using YAZ: Risks and Benefits" (see "The Trouble with YouTube: YAZ Case Study").
And lastly to a guy who claims to "exploit online assets" here's his response to why he does not put his professional links in his flaming hot posts. I hope you enjoy the discussion.
