Crazy Little Thing Called Love: If You Can't Say Something Nice… Well, Shout It

ben stiller and ironman in tropical thunderPeople call it going negative. Others understand that people don't forward a boring email or promote a vanilla digg. Well, think about it, do you?

IMFHO – If you aren't falling you aren't learning. If you don't loose followers on a regular basis, then they are not paying attention and you are not making yourself clear. I am not for everyone, call it an acquired taste; Like a David Letterman (the 80s – 90s version, before he got bitter and regretful) or the Onion, either you get me or you don't. And if you don't follow, that's cool. If you block me, I might ask why (@omarg I understand, @LaniAR, I don't understand) and then follow up with an "I'm sorry" if appropriate or a "Sounds fair" if I disagree with you.

But… And here's where the kid gloves come off: If you attack me (long form or short form) be prepared to defend yourself. And not just from a flame war, from facts, figures, references, documents, historical participation on social media sites like LINKEDIN, and mainly your own content. Where do you put your attention? What is it that you are constantly going on about?

I'll give you my top 3 from that little list over there >>> to the right.

#1 social media
#2 tech reviews and opinion
#3 about me
(verify these counts in a second before publishing…)  ;-0 )

And I've done a bunch of posts on sentiment, or how negative am I really. Maybe I need to update the meter, but I'm pretty up and happy and on the sunny side of things. Until I'm down. Then I see dark clouds overhead, I rant a bit, and I go dark myself and don't surface for days.

What I discovered at Dell and occasionally in social media was it doesn't really matter if your right. And though I may not like it, sometimes it may not be appropriate to go directly to the person who is having the conflict with you. (At Dell, I'm pretty sure it was a legal thing, an ethics thing, a sensitivity thing.) Okay, so don't go direct with the person, talk to their manager. And don't drop the f-bomb. EVER!

As a wrap, let's take one example of where jumping in with guns blazing (Well, my guns weren't hot until I was attacked after the first post.) was seen as inappropriate by some, offensive and worthy of counter strikes by others, accurate and praiseworthy by a few, and privately praised by many. And some of those private supporters, those who PM'd me on LinkedIN to say, "Keep it up." finally commented on the thread themselves. This particular thread demonstrates how even a former victim can become a supporter of the abuser if it's in the best interest of the victim.

Now I am not saying I'm right, or that my techniques and linguistic dexterity is always ON or appropriate. What I am saying, is that if you say something back it up with Passion AND Facts. If you attack, be prepared to meet the social media ninja.

And don't drop the f-bomb. EVER!

Personal Branding, What's In It For You?

      Picture 4

[My response to a great post by Tom Martin: Can a 10 Year Old Have a Personal Brand?]

"NOT having a personal brand is like standing in a stadium full of people and hoping work will find you."

There is a difference between a personal "brand" and being a kickass 10 year-old pitcher. What your son has is budding reputation, not a brand. The brand comes in when he/you/the coach/the company starts putting a phrase, ID or "brand" around your son.

In my case, building a personal brand inside Dell was vital to my survival. In a company with over 80k workers and lots of really smart people how would I get my name on the radar of the executives that might actually give me a shot at something bigger than I was already working on?

This was never more apparent then during a global online "innovation" contest. When I stepped up, after about 30 or so entrants, one of the insiders hooted, "Jay-Maaac!" My nick name had become a brand. And at that moment I stuck out from the crowd as someone to be watched.

Turns out my idea was chosen as one of 7 finalists out of 71 entries. In fact, I had 2 ideas chosen. Is that a rockstar? Well, the VP who sponsored the contest was let go within a few months of the first round and the winner was never crowned. Was it a personal brand? Yep, right there in the crowd, a person basically "sponsored" my pitch. And since this person had been at Dell for more than 7 years, his calling me out was a huge boost for my confidence.

I can think of some branding to apply to your son, but for now I say he should perfect his craft and keep working hard. The "brand" will be established in the process of becoming an ever better player and more importantly a good person.

Note: I really want to explore the elements of personal branding in a future post. But for now, go Google or Bing yourself and see what your "internet brand" says about you. If it's not what you want it to say, then you'd better get to work. Many people and events can affect your personal brand, but taking control of your brand on Google or Bing is a matter of effort and strategic work. I can tell you more about that in a bit as well.

Help, I've Fallen and I Can't Get an iPhone (exclusively from AT&T)

Category: about me,just for funjmacofearth @ 12:12 pm

T-mobile has got my family by the short and curly FAVES. And ATT has the iPhone in serious need of a jailbreak.

Here are the iPhone pricing plans from ATT's website as of 1-26-09 in Austin Texas. They won't show the prices on the website, but reveal them in a pdf download. So this will save you the trouble.

Well, having just added my mom to our family plan (so she will actually keep her cell phone powered on so we can call her) and gotten a snappy red BB Pearl for my efforts, I don't think my upgrade path is going to be inviting for quite a number of 18 month-contract/plans to come.

But I can still lust right along with you chosen few.

And my employer ain't gonna give us Exchange access anyway, so my BB is just fine. I really would like the Visual Voice mail though, so I can skip and delete VMs without ever calling voicemail. That's cool.

As for the iPhone becomeing the PC platform for the next evolution… I would not put it past Mr. Jobs and company to put out the iTablet or iNote at MacWorld in January 09. And when that touchscreen fanciness is 5 x 7 and my Pandora music station can come with me everywhere I go. Well, Mom, you might need to be lookin for a new phone, cause that Nokia won't work with ATT.

And don't even get me started about that zombie-amazon-google-opensource mobileOS [now known as Android, and I might have to look at it when I get a phone upgrade option on my T-Mobile accounts. ] I just don't believe in UFOs or monsters.

But I do believe Bill has retired.
I do believe that Vista has a lot of work to do before it's ready for primetime.
I do believe that WindowCE is terrible.
And I do believe it's the software not the phone that make the magic happen.

Bet I can guess the brand of your mp3 player (and your wife's and your son's– heck I even gave one of those to my Mom a few months ago) that one company gets that syncronization and synergy better than the others. (Sorry I had to put the word synergy in somewhere.)
