What's Wrong With Facebook? Can 500 Million Users and 60 Thousand Servers Be Wrong?

Something is wrong with Facebook.

Here's the screen I see more and more often these days, just switching between my own FB pages.

Server Problems at Facebook?

It's the equivalent of the "please wait" screen we've all grown so tired of when dealing with Flash and Flash-driven websites. But Facebook is not Flash driven, is it?

Still the amount of time Facebook now averages to load a page is getting painfully long. I used to think the game I played on FB, Knighthood was slow. But it might have been FB.

Here's the problem, in a nutshell.

60,000 servers to power Facebook

When your user base grows at exponential rates, so does your demand for server power, storage and bandwidth. And somewhere along the way, FB is getting punked. Datacenterknowledge.com released the above chart from a FB executive presentation and used previous server counts to estimate FB's server count to be upwards of 60,000. And that was way back on June 28th. They can't build their Oregon data center fast enough.

But as the services and add-ons to Facebook (apps, games, plugins) get more and more power hungry, the servers are having to work harder to deliver a single page, even if that page does not use any fancy tricks. So now Facebook is becoming frustratingly slow. And it's not just me that's noticing. A Google search of "facebook performance problems" reveals quite a bit of data suggesting the growth issues are not new. But when the numbers of users become surreal (500 million) you can't just throw more servers and hard drives at the problem.

I'm sure Facebook's IT and Engineer departments are working round the clock on the issues, but with the staggering load and increased service demands (Places, Farmville, Search) it is unlikely that the problems are going to be fixed soon. What they could do, however, is stagger the pages, so that the above "blank page" does not happen. Cause when nothing is happening it's quite clear that nothing is happening. Before long they're gonna have "Please Wait" notices going up. When that happens look for the hip crowd to start looking for a new social platform.

Hopefully it won't come to that.

Note: Facebook has opened a high-growth office in Austin, Texas. And I'm in the running to work there. So I may be shooting at my own feet here, but I'm determined to make FB better from the inside OR the outside.

Is Twitter Trying to Kill FriendFeed?
Ever since FriendFeed was sold to Facebook, we’ve been told over and over again that the company and its community were toast. And as if to underline the fact, FriendFeed’s access to the Twitter firehose was terminated and vaguely replaced with a slow version that is currently delivering Twitter posts between 20 minutes and two hours after their appearance on Twitter. At the Realtime CrunchUp, Bret Taylor confirmed this was not a technical but rather a legal issue. Put simply, Twitter is choking FriendFeed to death. (via @chrstphrbrwn)

Max Your Brand With 4 Social Media Optimization Tips
If you’ve been involved in the online marketing field over the last few years you’ve probably already familiarized yourself with your share of acronyms; SEO, PPC, CPA, CTR, ROI and not to mention the latest set of crazy additions straight from the social media scene RT, DM, ROV, (ReTweet, Direct Message, Return on Value). A Year In Review: 2009 Social Marketing Trends by Jeremiah Owyang
As we close out the year, it's important to look back at what happened in social marketing in order to plan for the future. There were four key trends in 2009 that CMOs should reflect on, starting at the macro level then shifting down to micro real-time updates. (when JO speaks I try and listen.)

Every single morning when you log into your laptop and all you can read on the WATblog’s and Techcrunch’s of the world is some or the other thing about Twitter or Facebook, isn’t that enough to dedicate a whole section to the round up 2009 to these two social networking giants?! Social media was the hype of year 2009 and I guess it will continue to be for atleast the next couple of years. 2009 laid the foundation for the viral growth of these networks with the subscriber numbers increasing by millions and the features by trillions.

"Thai, salad or ramen?" It's lunchtime on a typical Thursday and it strikes us that millions of people all over the world are pondering the same question. Top 11 — Yes, 11 — Movies of 2009 from Huff Po
Enough with top 10 lists. What's so special about 10 anyway? It's just a number, no more consequential than 9 or 11. Or even 14. I'm just kidding about 14. That's a ridiculous number. But what's wrong with a list of the top 8 movies of 2009? Nothing! So, because there's no place for number bigotry in a free society and because I couldn't figure out which movie to drop – to paraphrase Nigel from Spinal Tap – this list goes to 11.

(And now for something completely different, as MP would say. JIB JAB rules the sarcastic roost. I had to watch this twice to believe it. Probably a few more shares in me as well.) Octomom. Feedburner stats for real-time web
It’s been a feature request since day one (almost!), and we’re rolling it out today : analytics. Subscribers wanted to know how many feeds they susbcribed to with Superfeedr, while publishers wanted to know how many feeds from them are used in real-time, as well as how many subscriptions they generated.

ReTweet Tweet Tweet – We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

"If I ReTweet myself, then I ReTweet myself. I am large. I contain multitudes."
–  WWhitman adapted from Song of Myself

Seems like a good bit of Twitter is stuff like this:

picture 28 ReTweet Tweet Tweet We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

and stuff like this:

picture 29 ReTweet Tweet Tweet We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

and Mr. 50k (now nearing 100k) generates a heck of a lot of tweets that look like this:

picture 32 ReTweet Tweet Tweet We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

There's no questions that he's tweeting. And He's generated A LOT of tweets in his historical rise to non-fame.

picture 311 ReTweet Tweet Tweet We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

But much of it is little more than chatter, like the folks in the grocery store on their bluetooth headsets that talk to their disembodied friends through out their entire shopping spree. There's not much to the conversation. And the appearance is fairly goofy, especially if they like to gesture with their hands… But the conversation looks  similar to the tweets above. Chatter for chatter's sake.

[Wait a sec, "Husky pants for adults?" Now that's funny. Would I follow the guy? No. But he occasionally shows a blip of humor throughout his meteoric 14,000+ tweets.]

Let's do the math on this for a second.

picture 33 ReTweet Tweet Tweet We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

That's only 24 tweets a day, 7/24. So not un-reasonable. But check out Mr. 50k's tweetcloud:

picture 34 ReTweet Tweet Tweet We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

Id's say that's pretty much a tweet content value of ZERO.

Perhaps I need to do a bit of work on my content as well:

picture 35 ReTweet Tweet Tweet We Are What We Tweet: What Value Are You Giving Your Following?

But at least I have a few more words to work with.

So last observation:

The top image is a friend who is working to work Twitter as a business. To him, Twitter is an RSS feed that's easier to explain to people. Feed everything through it, derive benefit from the followers actions.

The 2nd image is from Whurley. No harm in referring to your self as an evil genius, over and over and over again. And no harm in self-promoting a bit via your Tweets. [We all do this.] But if your primary contribution to the twitterverse looks like a self-selected "genius" promo, well… ]

The 3rd image is from Mr. 50k. Who in dialogue via twitter admitted that he Auto-DMs people so that he can communicate with them better. When I asked him why he didn't at least visit the person's Twitter page and see if he had any connection whatsoever with the person, he responded, "When you get over 100 new followers a day, you see if you have time to contact each one of them directly."

In a rather amazing turning of social media on it's ear, Mr. 50k called me after I had been tweaking his ear for a week to stop "gaming" Twitter. He asked me to stop. We had a nice chat. "You can't believe what kinds of opportunities this number of followers gives me."

Uh, yes, actually I can. What I still wonder, is what kind of value you can possibly give to your followers in 736 tweets per month. And if it's just chatter, WOW that is a lot of wasted energy for all parties concerned.

I will leave you with the actual WWhitman quote.

"If I contradict myself, then I contradict myself. I am large. I contain multitudes."

[Excerpt from FluentSearch.com's #twitterbook notes]picture 271 Tim OReillys #Twitterbook Twitter Hints and Tips My Notes

  • In social networks you gain and bestow status on those you associate with
  • A key function of a publishing brand (that's your personal Twitter brand) is the bestowal of status by what you pay attention to
  • If you only pay attention to yourself you are not as valuable to your community
    • You don't learn as much from your readers
    • You don't bind them to you by amplifying their voice
