Update 6-29-09: Iran election: faces of the dead and detained
Last weekend I wrote a bit about IRAN and folks turning their Twitter avatars green in support of the people of IRAN. Here's what I said about changing direction and adding the GREEN Peace sign back into my Avatar.
Okay, putting the peace sign back in my avatar due to user feedback. I still believe that clickstroke activism is not very ACTIVE. But is is SOMETHING. And SOMETHING is SOMETHING.
But with today's paper it is clear that the situation in IRAN has moved on to something along the lines of Tienanmen Square.
According to the paper, while the government public crackdowns are having their intended effect, and the streets are becoming more quite, at night people are taking to the roofs of their homes and chanting songs. The story goes on to say that the government is breaking into homes and arresting people for this behavior.
I can't turn my icon any greener than it already is. But are there ways to support the people and the process in Iran? So if an american WANTED to do something ACTIVE, what would that be?
I don't think we've been given many options at this point. I recall with the Obama campaign, I was compelled for the first time in my voting history to contribute, not once but several times over the course of the re-election campaign. So where are the online activism locations where I can actually give money to support the sorting out of the human rights issues, the election issues and the police state issues.
Here in front of the entire world, Iran is showing an evil face and trying it's best to suppress the truth and will of the people. And the global mind SHOULD BE ENVISIONING ACTION to be taken.
No anwers today, but a question. What CAN we do? Besides GREENING our faces. At the moment I will stay in solidarity with the person in the image at the top of the post, until I can find a more productive ACTION.
