Deceptive, Confusing or Am I Just a Dork? – Buying a 17" Macbook Pro

Category: social media,trust & reputationjmacofearth @ 1:51 pm

I received my 17" Macbook Pro yesterday from Expercom! I was like a little kid when the FedEX guy arrived. Skipping up my driveway. "It's here, it's here."

The only problem was, I "thought" I was ordering the new "monoblock" 17" and what I got was the earlier model. No super battery, no unibody, and no potential to put in 8 gigs of ram. So I contacted ExperCom and they said, I could either 1. return the MacBook Pro for my $2,400 minus a 15% restocking charge; or 2. exchange the one I had for the new ones when they were expected to be shipping in 3 – 5 weeks!  WOW!

So please, take a look a the screen grab below. Or visit the actual page and see if this was a simple mistake, a bait-and-switch scheme, or just a case of bad design.

expercom's 17" macbook pro sales page

Now I guess I should've known that the NEW MacBook Pro was a 2.66 mhz chip and not a 2.6 mhz! But I was even jumping back and fourth between this page and apple's site to make sure I got everything just right. I didn't.

On Apple's site, where ExperCom grabbed the 17" spash screen, I CAN'T buy the older version. So to get a old 17" MacBook Pro I'd have to go to Apple's refurbished area. But HERE on EXPERCOM I have the advertisement and then 8 computers that I assumed to all be monoblock 17" MacBook Pros, like the one in the picture ABOVE the listings.

And I think it's kind of deceptive to list the 4 ACTUAL NEW MacBook Pros as "Out of Stock" when they have never been "In Stock." If Apple has not shipped any 17" MacBook Pros then these should say "Preorder." But when I look at the page I see 8 MacBook Pros either "In Stock" or "Out of Stock," but they are all NEW MACBOOK PROs, or so I thought.

So ExperCom has given me the option of paying them over $300 for MY mistake, or waiting and swapping the machine whenever the new ones ship. I have requested instructions to return the unit for the swap, but I have not heard back from them. I suspect it is against the law for me to send them back the computer while they keep the money I authorized on my credit card. So we'll see.

Oh and one last bit. The computer shipped about an hour after I placed the order, so I can't fault ExperCom for being efficient. But when I got the initial email about the mistake, now about 22 hours ago, the main question was "is the box opened?" [Back in the day that was how retailers hooked you. If you opened the box the answer was, "We're sorry Sir, but we cannot sell the computer as new if the seal has been broken."]

So the shiny new old MacBook Pro sits in it's box by my front door. And I wait for ExperCom to respond now to my request for an RMA. And I know that shipping the unit back and reversing the charges on my credit card would put ExperCom at the disadvantage, not me… But I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt if they respond before the end of the day, which will be over 24 hours. After all I bought my last MacBook from them and had no problems.

UPDATE: Friday 13, Feb. 2009:
The owner of Expercom called me back and we worked out the best possible deal! Really. I am shipping the unit I have back with an RMA from Expercom. I am pre-ordering the 17" I really want. And they will process the order when they actually have the units, and Greg is upgrading my shipping to 2-day for free. So that's all I asked for. Thank you Greg and Expercom.

Songsmith from Microsoft… MS Uses a MacBookPro on Their Demo Video of Songsmith

Category: just for fun,social media,tech opinion,tech reviewsjmacofearth @ 1:30 pm

I am sure the viral nature of the mistake will make some people famous for being so stupid or so clever.

Some art director somewhere is in hot water. Maybe an entire agency will get put up for review. And maybe Songsmith will rock the world like RockBand has, but this is amazing.

In their new promo video for Songsmith, Microsoft's application is shown running on a MacBookPro. Granted the little girl has stickers all over the back of her MBP, as does my daughter, but you can even see a little bit of the Apple logo poking up above the flower sticker that takes out the bulk of the Apple.

The music created by this beast of a karioke software system is bad enough, but who could've approved, and approved, and approved this video with a MacBookPro running Songsmith. Thousands of viewings at the agency. Hundreds of views with Microsoft staff, and NOBODY ASKED, HEY WHY IS THIS ON A MAC?

More likely, several people asked that question and were squelched. Why? Because the video had already been shot? Because the project would be over budget AND late if the creative agency were forced to reshoot the Windows program on a Windows-Compatible PeeCee. Oh, wait, perhaps the Mac IS a Windows-Compatible PeeCee. I assume it'll run Vista if you want to have some real fun. But my MBP runs XP inside a VMWare instance just fine.

There are even several screenshots of the application's screens while Songsmith is running. I will have to slow the video down and see if they are using Paralells, VM's Fusion or perhaps Apple's Bootcamp. Regardless! The Songsmith demonstration video is about 50% Apple MACBOOKPRO. The laptop that is eating everyone else's lunch.

Perhaps the creative folks thought they would be funny. Maybe they thought it should be put up against iTunes new learning tracks.

However, the most likely reason the MBP was used in the Songsmith video demonstrating Windows software is…

[drumroll please]

Because creatives are Macs not PeeCees. Get it? "I'm a Mac!" And Apple still has an advantage in graphic design, advertising, media and other creative environments.

Of the stock photography found for most "computers" either in lifestyle settings or by themselves about 70% of the images are of Macs. Apples distinct design makes them stick out like glowsticks to anyone who uses a Mac.

But how a Microsoft executive, ANY MICROSOFT EXECUTIVE, let this commercial for Songsmith get out demonstrating their software on a Apple MacBookPro should have his/her head served to them on a plate. And unfortunately the cutting should go right down to the funny guy who said, "Just put stickers on the Mac, no one will notice."

I like it. I am sure the viral nature of the mistake will make some people famous for being so stupid or so clever.

And like I have said several times in the last week, "Windows an application that I run on my Mac sometimes to get older cranky programs to run."

But Microsoft IS in the OS business. And they fumbled grandely with Vista. And the netbooks are loading XP, not Vista. So if it got out that half of Microsoft employees were using MacBooks then we'd have a BIG news story. But by golly, Microsoft is demonstrating their new wizbang application on a Macintosh MacBookPro from Apple. I am going to check the weatherunderground for temperatures in hades.

It had to happen, might as well be me.

Lyrics for my Songsmith on a Mac Tune. Lyrical suggestions will be credited to their authors at the publication of the song.

Well I wonder who made this, i'd like to shake their hand
I don't know if you're working for Microsoft, but would you like to join my RockBand?
Putting Macs right under their noses, it's amazing you weren't canned
Cause now that its on YouTube its gone viral across the land

So please mister songsmith – let's write a catchy song
I'll bring my Mac-Book-Pro so Windows can play along
Please mister songsmith – …. la la la la

And when I get the Songsmith demo running on MY MacBookPro I'll upload the video. You might do the same, regardless of what computing platform you prefer.

The NYTimes reported the slip first on Saturday Jan 24:

“Microsoft, huh? So it’s pretty easy to use?” The line is delivered without an I-know-you-know wink acknowledging that Microsoft is not the company likely to come first to mind when ease of use is mentioned. Songsmith works only on Windows, but the laptop in the video running Windows is a MacBook Pro, adorned with decorative stickers that obscure the Apple icon in the center.
