Visualizing Twitter Part Deux: I Tweet Therefore I Am, Or Must've Been Awake!

The API-sucking apps for Twitter are seriously where the fun begins and ends with Twitter. The network is cool, the followers (though I hate that name) also cool. But the apps working the network is where the real innovation is happening. What has Twitter proper done lately in the way of innovation? Fail? And did I read recently that 90% of Twitter's server load is due to API calls and not people on Twitter.com. So where will Twitter.com, or Biz and Co. at Twitter the company, add value? Cause if Twitter is just a network (and I'd argue that it is), it can/will be replicated and sucked down by Google or Microsoft or Oracle in a wingbeat. Pay attention.

xefer.com (charting the time of day and day of the week when you tweet)

tweetbeep (it's like google alerts but for twitter)

tweetreach (how far do your tweets go?)

twist (see trends in Twitter)

backtweets (search links on twitter)

twittervenn (venn diagrams using twitter data)

I did some fun experiments with Twitter Venn when I discovered it in March, around the time of SXSW. I still think for trending, it may be my favorite tool to show brand reach and currency. So, do you suppose it's just mac fanboys who are creating such a roar about Apple? Even with WIN7 the new iMac/Mac OS killer, Vista-redeemer, Apple is 5 times more likely to be discussed than HP or Dell. And more than twice as frequently as HP or Dell combined. That's Reach and Power combined.

Go poke your head into the Apple Store and tell me what the heck are all those people doing in there? Seriously, the stores are packed!

I know I'm waiting to see what the next iPhone will be. [Hey isn't Father's day coming right up? Nice timing Apple!]

The Top 6 Lessons of #SXSW Interactive 2009 – What'd You Learn?

The 50,000-f00t overview of SXSW Interactive 2009.

1. The Social in Social Media is about getting together. The special ingredient not available online: Trust. I can see it in your eyes, you know what I mean?

2. The luminaries of Social Media are just folks. The biggest names at SXSWi were in the same "bloggers" lounge with the rest of us. And up close and personal they didn't seem much different. In fact some were downright shy unless drawn out.

3. The business at SXSW is done in the rooms not in the panels.

4. Drinking and partying would be a waste of the electrifying energy.

5. Always accept Events on Facebook and Twitter. What do you have to lose, you can still decide not to go at any point.

Next Year at SXSW Interactive 2010 – #SXSW Let's Do Something

So we talked, we tweeted, we sat side by side and blogged our asses off. And SXSWi has now passed into the past. And I am officially behind on my self-defined deadline for a consulting project I started the WED before the conference began.

To those I met and those I merely admired from a distance… Here's to you.

Two things I would like to leave you with.

1. Don't go home sad and lonely go home and reconnect with those you connected with this week. What we have here at SXSWi is REAL.

2. Let's DO SOMETHING Next Time.

We talked a lot, we had a lot of "start up" chatter and new t-shirts. But next year I'm proposing we have a panel, or a panel a day (sprint style) to create a business or non-profit during the conference. There is SO MUCH talent here in the convention center, perhaps we could get that fulcrum to work from here and move the planet.

A final thank you to Jon Lebkowski and his SocialWebStrategies for inviting me to be on the Sustainability panel this year. It was an honor.

And to Jodee and Pricilla from Peoplebrowsr.com who have given me a challenge of a lifetime.

So yes, do go home. Travel safely. But don't forget that this experience we had was REAL. Don't forget and get complacent back in your previous state of affairs. Do something.

An Outsider Extravert at #SXSW – Gets quiet in my own private idaho

What is it about these HUGE events that gets me soooooo excited and then when I am there, soooooo tired?

i gotta get out of this corner

Yesterday I hit upon a perfect balance for me, a moment of zen, as Jon Stewart would call it.

I was sitting in the middle of the Techset Blogger Lounge, filled with chatting folks and raucous laughter. I was talking to a person next to me about their "product" PEOPLEBROWSER, and that was cool. And then I put my headphones on and was transported into my own zone. Soundtrack of my life, something…

I wrote on a piece of paper to my new friend, "I could not be happier."

What the heck? So what about the moment had changed.

I was not looking for a connection or a job lead, although I am currently jobless.

I was not engaged with the room, other than as an observer and chatting with my friend.

I was seeing lots of the people I TWEET with and FOLLOW. The luminaries of the web, and … Well, it was fun to look at them, to acknowledge them if they glanced my way, more than likely they would no recognize my mug or my name. And I was in my own capsule of sound and jamming away on this Social Media Web thing.

Thing was I didn't owe anyone anything and no one had any expectations or needs of me either.

So today I have recreated the scene again. This time with my back to the windows so there is less glare on my screen/eyes. And i'm in the frackin comfy chairs this time. Wow. The "party" rages on around me, Zappos doing some kind of video promo stuff on the other side of a black screen from me. And here I am. In my own little zone. Good connectivity. Good music. Free food and drinks.

Okay, but here's the kicker. I'm going to go home now. I'm going to leave the moment of "flow" and go catch a nap.

Ah, another AIR just showed up. Gotta go re-talley my total.

And that's it… Until the party tonight where I hope to chat with Guy Kawasaki for the 2nd time in my life.
