Little Blog Marketing Metrics: Insights & Recommendations – Google Analytics Numbers

Passion and emotion can fuel action, but numbers drive revenue.

Each month I try and give some insight into what's working and what's not working in the sub-10,000 per/month blog. I'm sure I work as hard as the big boys, but of course I have to work harder to get traffic and optimize what I do have. Here is a quick look at my numbers from Uber.la.

Here are the quick things I notice for the last 30 days of my numbers.

80% of my traffic are first-time visitors. I need to make sure I'm doing enough to keep them or get them to come back.

Top referrers from my social networking:

  • Twitter
  • Google+
  • Facebook
  • StumbleUpon
  • Reddit
  • The Mashable traffic came from my comment on a Pinterest "Design is Dead" post that seemed like a recap of something I had written a week earlier.
  • LinkedIn – this number seems low, but perhaps most of the conversations are happening within the LinkedIN groups and don't necessarily come to my site.
  • The SOPAstrike traffic came from my participation in the SOPA Blackout – referrals came from the Sopastrike.com site.

Question: with all the hype about Pinterest, I'm wondering if Pinterest only drives traffic to Pinterest. Why isn't it showing up in my analytics?

Long Tail Content Insights

Blogs are fine, but they do not lend themselves to deep content navigation. So we have to use other strategies to get people to our high-value but older content. You can see my 2009 content has a lot more hits than my 2010 content.  And my use of tabbed navigation at the top of the page is bringing some consistent exposure to some of my content selections. How can I do better at exposing the older content?

The Last 24 Hours

KEY: Blue line is visitor traffic, orange dotted line is page views

What's cool about little charts like this (this one is from the Wassup WordPress plugin) is that we can see immediate results and trends. What ever I was doing at 9 – 10 am yesterday was resulting in some pretty high page views.

Recommendations:
1. Dial in the tweets and G+ posts to target deep content as well as new content.
2. Commenting on high-traffic sites can generate more traffic in an hour than the entire month of LinkedIN posts.
3. Continue finding logical groupings of high-value content for easier navigation.

Just Click It; superbowl, komen, more Pinterest, SEO missteps, inbound marketing

Screen Shot 2012 02 06 at 10.33.46 AM Just Click It; superbowl, komen, more Pinterest, SEO missteps, inbound marketingThe Super Bowl(tm) has come and gone. And Mr. Brady did not add to his ring collection. It was a fairly well-played game. And the advertisers cannot be happier about that. Even the 4th quarter buyers got their audience numbers, if not their money's worth. Let's look at the links that will keep you on top of social media innovations for the coming week, as we move into the time-without-football. Here are your HOT LINKS OF THE WEEK.

SuperBowl XLVI Sets Two Twitter Records (Technorai)
Twitter metrics show that SuperBowl XLVI set two new records for most tweets per second, claiming the 2nd and 3rd spot on the top list. At the end of the game Sunday night between the Giants and the Patriots, Twitter showed that there were 12,233 tweets per second, claiming the number two spot. Just after that in the number three spot is Madonna at the half time show with 10,245 tweets per second. That's enough to put Madonna back into the spotlight for another few months hey? You have to admit, she did pretty good.

OPINION: It was a huge week, finishing or beginning (depending on how you split your calendar) with last night's Super Bowl(tm) Ad Fest. And what is certain, social media came out the winner in a number of efforts. But the work is not done. While Komen has backed down from their original Planed Parenthood divorce, they are not saying they will reinstate the grants. And regardless of how you feel about the pro-life vs. pro-choice issue, the damage to Komen's brand has been done. It was swift and punitive. And the web flexed some serious muscles. We are entering an era where activism on the web may in fact have some real world impact. Where Haiti and Egypt proved the power of social networks, the current issues are showing that the social mind is begging to coalesce and take physical action in the world. This is going to be an interesting week.

The Analytics Microscope: Only Metrics You See Can Become Actionable

There are a lot of analytics packages on the market. The big daddy, Google Analytics is free. So why not use that for everything?

When we look at the same dashboard day after day we become desensitized to the changes that we should be paying attention to. It might be good to look into a couple of different microscopes.

Jetpack is the free plugin from WordPress that does a lot of stuff, but their Stats packages is pretty deep, and fairly good at keeping up in real-time.

WassUp is a cool plugin with a WordPress Widget that can display number of live visitors, OS in use, and a ton of other stats, live on your blog.

Woopra is a free real-time stats package. It might be prettier, but the data is pretty dense. It claims real-time "on page" analysis, but I've not see it work very well.

Google Analytics, the motherload of data. But you have to parse through so much, if you don't know what you are looking for your going to miss a lot. WARNING: NEVER, I repeat, NEVER, give the CEO access to GA. You will get late-night screenshots with titles like, "What's wrong with this page?" and "Why aren't we getting more leads on this page?"

I've written a micro-review of Gaug.es and I'm currently using ChartBeat.

So make sure you're getting the quick picture that can influence your writing, your promotional efforts, and even your "associated content" links. Using several microscopes can keep your eyes fresh and keep the BIG ACTIONABLE ITEMS in clear view.
