If the Marketing Land post below is to be believed, we are in for a dark future on Facebook. How far can they push the news feed? How much advertising can they push before they finally piss off the users and see a large drop in usage? Facebook is now considering eliminating PAGE posts from the news feed. Perhaps this doesn’t mean much to you if you don’t use Facebook as a marketing tool, but for those of us interested in creating and promoting online content, Facebook is the biggest game in town. Let’s look at a few of my organic reach results from pages that I manage.
First let’s look at my most successful page for my blog The Whole Parent.
Think about how many followers/friends you have. You’re average post/update is getting to 10 – 15 people max. Until there’s sharing and liking which up the reach a little bit.
Here’s my second page for The Off Parent. Another blog I run.
I’m still seeing an average of 15 views, even though this page has 500 fewer followers. Both blogs are on similar topics and I cross post between them frequently to up my organic reach.
Finally, my salty meme page, which is a Facebook-Only project.
300 Followers and about 6 views per post.
Already the organic reach for pages is pretty dead. But if Facebook moves forward with their plans, my free Facebook marketing techniques will be dead in the water. What’s it going to be like when only 3% of your posts are “friends” and non-ad-supported content? We’re at about 5% now. I’m guessing if Page reach is limited Facebook is not likely to replace that with friends posts, but more likely more ads.
Can Facebook kill itself by monetizing too much? How many ads and Sponsored Posts are too many? Already the Facebook experience has been greatly diminished. And we see the results. Facebook is not the social media platform for the younger generations. They have moved on to Instagram (owned by Facebook) and Snapchat.
