Dear Google, your compassion for your users failing. Locking me out of AdSense for 6 years without any recourse (see: Phucked by Google – Active Media Academy) is bad form. And now your Gmail neglect (see: GMail is Broken: How Long Will Google Leave Users Hanging?) is showing and you’re lack of attention this matter, just shows, ever more, that you care about your large corporate clients and large paying customers, but you could care less about the individual user.
How did we get here?
How do we get back?
What Google knows about you is frightening. Sure, they claim that they don’t keep a personal record of your information, but what that means technically, is that I am [email protected]@@ew and not John McElhenney. But here’s a tiny snapshot of what the internet knows about my recent behavior online. (Using DataSelfie Chrome Extension)
If you want to go down the rabbit hole of your own collected online profile, try out the plugin. And this is after I use about 4 data suppression extensions as well as never using Google.com for search. I use DuckDuckGo, which does not track its users’ activity. Do you use any data protection when you browse? Do you trust that Google will use your information good only? Do you think there’s simply nothing we can do to stop marketers from gathering a frighteningly robust personal profile of our online activities, likes, and buying patterns? The matrix probably knows I’m looking to get a new pair of tennis shoes in the next month and that I prefer ASICS and New Balance, but that I really shop the bargains in tennis shoes online using Amazon.
Do No Evil. — The Google Guiding Principle
How do you think they are doing?
I think Google is evil. I protect my data from them as best I can. I don’t use their search engines, and I block tracking apps, cookies, and the like. But… I use Gmail. And Gmail is the mother of all data collection platforms for Google. If I mention traveling to NYC in an email to a friend and advertising starts showing up for hotels in NYC, well… when that happens, you do begin to feel that some greater, evil, force is collecting and refactoring information about you and your loved ones.
Take Care Out There,
