Content Marketing Analytics and Pop Quiz
First the Quiz:
- What’s the best day of the week for your site?
- What are your top three posts of all time?
- What #hashtags actually grow your audience and get you new readers?
- How frequent do you Tweet or post on Facebook when you have a new article?
Day of the week.
It’s important to understand if your site gets love on the weekdays or the weekend. This says a lot about your audience. And what about time of day? Perhaps you have a large group of readers who are not US-based and if you don’t tweet during their hours, you’re missing part of your readership.
Top Three Posts.
I have a single post that’s at the top of my site ever single day. No matter how much content I post or promote, this ONE post rules all others. Do you know your HOME RUN POST? Have you written updates to that post? Do you plan to refresh it soon? What about the focus of the post, does it really serve your business?
Hashtags Do Work.
The hashtag is mainly used on Twitter, but it has shown some reach potential on Facebook during events like the Super Bowl or political debates. IF, you are trying to grow your Facebook following. But you need to know which #hashtags are more active and more valuable than others. On one of my blogs there is a HUGE difference between these tags: #dad #father #men #singledad. And I’m guessing you don’t have a clue which one works best for spreading my content.
Frequency and Reach of Facebook and Twitter Post.
With the current state of organic reach, you’re content is getting shared to about 3% of your readers. So if you limit yourself to 2 – 3 tweets a day, for a new post, you are really missing out. I try to create a unique tweet about 10 times a day (over the first 24-hour cycle) when I’ve got a new piece of content that I think is strong. The bad news is your PAID reach on Facebook is the only way you’re going to get out there without pissing everyone off. On Twitter PAID is dumb. So Tweet away. Those followers that complain, don’t understand you goals and needs.
Goals.
Do you know what your growth target is? Do you know how many new visitors your going to need to achieve your goals? Do you have a budget to increase your reach on Facebook (if this is the businesses particular demographic)?
Without clear goals and clearer strategic plans you might be generating a lot of "activity" on social, but not really hitting your targets. Do you know which tweets performed best? With or without a photo? Do you have a favorite #hashtag that you OWN?
The Wrap.
Know your content and your audience. What has worked in the past will work again. Rewrite, refresh, and explore. If 80% of your visitors are first-timers are you taking care of their orientation needs? Make sure there is additional content they will be interested in. And set goals the track towards your success. Social is great if you MANAGE it. If you dabble in it, you’re likely to be unhappy with the results. Pay for Facebook reach AFTER a post has shown viral potential. Never pay for Twitter reach.
