eHealth Your Time Has Come: Telemedicine for the rest of us
Today I paid $49 for a video call from a PA (physician’s assistant) from a local startup called Remedy Health. I booked the call on the web. Paid $49 dollars out of pocket, how’s that for healthcare pricing, and got a video call from a nice woman at 8:30 am on a Sunday. Win-Win-Win.
This little Austin startup has a plan to make our healthcare affordable, convenient, and finally caught up with the times technologically. We’re all Zooming and Skyping everyone and why not see a doctor the same way? Save yourself a trip to the office. Sit in the comfort of your own home, in your pjs, and talk to a friendly PA, who can do most of what you need. If you need to see a doctor for follow up, they will encourage to you do just that.
In my case, I have a tooth that needs to be extracted. But tooth extraction today is quite expensive. So, I’ve been putting it off. A few nights ago my tooth woke me up, and the pain was a bit disorienting. If you’ve ever had wicked tooth pain you know what I’m talking about. It’s inside your head. You can’t get away from it. And no amount of ibuprophen or tylenol is going to touch it. At least not in the short-term. And, if you know about these kind of things, tooth pain usually means infection. And infections inside your skull are a very dangerous thing. Your entire system gets engaged in fighting the good fight to keep the infection from wiping you out, entering your brain area, etc. It’s a crisis in your body whenever the head is involved.
My quick visit, 15 minutes, with a pleasant PA was all I needed. Even when my video didn’t work I could see her. She smiled and reassured me that the antibiotic she was prescribing was perfect for oral issues. And she prescribed Tramodol, a weak opiod, to ease the pain over and above the traditional meds could. And… as of this moment, I’m feeling much better. (The Hagendas ice cream bar might have helped a bit as well.)
This is the future.
The minor emergency clinic I visited yesterday was going to charge me $225 for a self-pay appointment. Well, if that’s not an issue…
Today, I give you Remedy Health in Austin, Texas. Tomorrow I give you Remedy Health USA.
