Just PLEXIT! Multi-Billion Dollar Rebranding for Perplexity.ai

Okay, I love perplexity.ai. I asked the emerging ai and Google search competitor what a good alternative URL would be for the business. Here is my convo with Perplexity about the Perplexity URL. In the end, the AI did not accept my offer to trade my URL for a job at Perplexity, but it was a fun moment. And I now own another obscure .ai domain.

"just plex it" (TM)

Today, Perplexity agreed to acquire PLEXIT.AI for an undisclosed sum. Here’s the statement from Perplexity moments before the transaction was tendered.

Despite these efforts, the company may need to consider additional strategies to improve brand recall, such as creating a catchy acronym or nickname that’s easier for users to spell and remember. This approach could potentially lead to community-driven alternatives like “PLEXIT,” although the official name remains Perplexity AI.

A Rebranding Is Needed

Perplexity is hard to remember. The sound of the word makes me type PUR* all the time when it’s obvious it’s *PER.* Yes, and…

How does PLEX IT sound as a slogan? (“Do you Yahoo?” and “Google It” are the most recent great brands in this space. I loved “What the Bing?” but it never trended, as I just made it up.) As Openai announces their search engine intentions and Google’s Gemini shows signs of life, it’s going to be a battle out there. Don’t you think PLEXIT.AI might be a better, easier to spell and thus remember, URL?

Now I just need to convince someone in marketing (do they even have marketing yet?) that I am a solid choice for creative content lead for Perplexity.ai. A longshot. But hey, in this moment of .ai domains and ai explosions as well as implosions, I thought this was worth the $200 or so to own the domain plexit.ai for the next two years.

“Have you tried to plex it?”

“Let’s plex it.”

“Why don’t you plex it and get back to me.”

The extensions just write themselves. I’m going to use a prompt ai to video tool to build the video and tik tok campaign.

Finding a shorter and more brandable URL for Perplexity.ai involves considering a few key factors:

  1. Shortness: A shorter URL is easier to remember, type, and fits better in marketing materials.
  2. Relevance: The URL should ideally relate to the brand name or the services offered.
  3. Memorability: A good URL is catchy and easy to recall.
  4. Brandability: The URL should have the potential to become a brand in itself, distinct and recognizable.

Given these factors, let’s brainstorm a few ideas:

  1. px.ai: Short, memorable, and maintains a connection to the original name through the use of “p” and “x”. The “.ai” extension is retained, emphasizing the AI aspect of the brand.
  2. prplx.ai: This version shortens the name while keeping it recognizable. It retains the “.ai” extension, linking it to AI technology.
  3. plex.ai: Suggests “complexity” or “perplexity” in a shortened form, easy to remember and still relevant to AI.
  4. pxly.ai: Adds a playful twist to the abbreviation, making it more brandable and unique while retaining a hint of the original name.
  5. perplx.ai: Maintains a closer relation to the full name but shortened, keeping it recognizable and unique.

Each option offers a different balance of memorability, brandability, and relevance to the original name. The choice depends on the direction you wish to take the brand, whether leaning more towards a minimalist and abstract approach or keeping closer ties to the original naming convention.
