How Bad Are Instagram Ads? (Probably Worse Than You Imagined)

REACH IS THE THING

It is getting harder and harder for content creators to get their articles, memes, and books to you. In a moment of irrational exuberance, I thought, “Hey, let’s boost and IG post about a book and a mailing list I’m offering about DATING. My gold topic. Seems like a slam dunk.

The numbers are awful.

THREE interactions with my content? SRSLY? That’s bad. But wait, what did I pay?

Pretty bad, right? But here’s the kicker.

The only action I wanted Instagram users to take, was to subscribe to a free distribution of my newest book on dating. (You can sign up here: Joy + Joy for free, signup)

Do you want to know the real result of my THREE web visits for $13?

One subscriber. ONE.

I’ll let this ad play out and tally the results of my $30 spend, but I don’t think it’s going to get any better. (I did not, “let it play out.” I paused the shitty ad right after making this post.)

If you’re thinking of advertising on TikTok, Twitter, Facebook (FB, Instagram, Snapchat), LinkedIn, or elsewhere, make sure you’re working with someone who knows what they are doing. Or you’re going to get $13 boosts with ONE subscriber. That’s a high acquisition cost!! Most paid social media is bad. We do it. We hope the “signals” will show Google we have valuable content. But the leads and the actions taken by our visitors are NULL.
